To start off... Teaching Kindergartners how to be good "digital citizens" can be difficult because they are only 5-6 years old. I found this video at the beginning of the year (since it is our first year being BYOD and there are MANY devices in our classroom) and I thought these kiddos did a great job explaining some digital citizenship advice...

I love watching and listening to TED Talks and the College of Education at NC State does too! Earlier this year I stumbled across an article that Hailey Reissman wrote about the "7 Smart Ways to Use Technology in Classrooms" and I couldn't agree more with what she had to say:

In my classroom, we use technology during our Morning Meeting, Daily 5, Social Studies and Science, Math, and sometimes Writing. Since we are a BYOD school, we have A LOT of devices in our classroom. There are different things my TA and I do to help motivate the kids with technology when it comes to learning, specifically in reading and comprehension.
In Content Area Reading: Literacy and Learning Across the Curriculum, VVM includes this statement in their text from Knickerbocker and Rycik, “Students’ motivation for reading and learning with texts increase when they perceive that the text is relevant to their own lives and when they believe that they are capable of generating a credible response to their reading of the text (Knickerbocker & Rycik, 2002)” (p. 149). I agree with this because if my students are interested in the topic that we are reading, they are more engaged throughout the reading process and therefore relate and respond to the text. One of the tech tools we use in my classroom is called EPIC! My Teacher Assistant and I created "mailboxes" or libraries for each student based on their interests that they use during the "Listening to Reading" portion of Daily 5. The students are engaged in what they are reading and listening to! Other tools I have used for read aloud or online text are TumbleBooks, PebbleGo, and Reading Eggs. When we a few minutes before lunch or after recess when we are getting ourselves "back together" from transitioning we will sometimes use Storyline Online where actors and actresses read books aloud to the kids. I don't let the kids use this tool during Daily 5 because I want to keep it "special" for when we are all at the carpet together. The kids are mesmerized by this website and seeing the celebrities read aloud and they always want to try and find the books in our school library!
A big part of the reading process is comprehension! Instead of using paper forms and sheets to fill out character, setting, main idea, key facts, etc. I have my students respond to their reading/listening using Chatterpix Kids, Draw and Tell, and sometimes Flipgrid. I will have a list of questions related to the text (meeting standards) and the kids will either film their responses or record their voice over a picture, depending on the tech tool they use. We also practice reading sight words on using the SmartBoard instead of just using paper notecards and the kids get so excited when we do this!
